Viral migrant-bashing
I was contacted this week by someone who had had a nasty chain message about pensioners, migrants and the benefits system posted on his Facebook wall. This was a viral message which we have heard about before as it, or a version of it, has been circulating over the past few years. The text he received read like this:
Dear Prime Minister The RT. Hon. David Cameron, MP.
I wish to ask you a Question:- "Is This True?". I refer to the Pension Reality Check. Are you aware of the following?
The British Government provides the following financial assistance:-
BRITISH OLD AGED PENSIONER
(bearing in mind they worked hard and paid their Income Tax and National Insurance contributions to the British Government all their working life)
Weekly allowance: £106.00?
IMMIGRANTS/REFUGEES LIVING IN BRITAIN
(No Income Tax and National Insurance contribution whatsoever)
Weekly allowance: £250.00BRITISH OLD AGED PENSIONER
Weekly Spouse Allowance: £25.00?
ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS/REFUGEES LIVING IN BRITAIN
Weekly Spouse Allowance: £225.00BRITISH OLD AGED PENSIONER
Additional Weekly Hardship Allowance: £0.00?
ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS/REFUGEES LIVING IN BRITAIN
Additional Weekly Hardship Allowance: £100.00A British old age pensioner is no less hard up than an illegal immigrant/refugee yet receives nothing
BRITISH OLD AGED PENSIONER
TOTAL YEARLY BENEFIT £6,000?
ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS/REFUGEES LIVING IN BRITAIN
TOTAL YEARLY BENEFIT: £29,900Please read all and then forward to all your contacts so that we can lobby for a decent state pension. After all, the average pensioner has paid taxes and contributed to the growth of this country for the last 40 to 60 years. Sad isn't it? Surely it's about time we put our own people first.
Please share this, I JUST DID!
Familiar?
So how much of the information about migrants in this message is based on facts? Unsurprisingly, the answer is very little. Most migrants pay taxes if they are in employment like anyone else. Overall, analysis suggests that migrants make a small positive contribution to the UK economy and in particular to key growth sectors like healthcare, education, financial services and many more.
Refugees have the same right to access benefits and to work in the UK as a British citizen – no more and no less. Irregular migrants do not have the right to work in the UK and have no right to access benefits - but it is thought that many end up paying tax and NI as their ability to work depends on use of false National Insurance cards.
Both the ‘Weekly Spouse Allowance’ of £225 and the ‘Weekly Hardship Allowance’ that ‘illegal immigrants and refugees’ receive according to this email seem to be works of fiction.
Despite containing such confused information, this email, or a version of it, has been widely shared across the internet – so much so that it was the subject of a Parliamentary briefing paper in April this year. According to this, the email has a long and chequered history:
The House of Commons Library first became aware of the email in early 2010 but it has a much longer pedigree. It contains text from a protest email which has been circulating in Australia for some time now, but which may have originated in Canada. Versions also circulate in the United States, and elements even appear in protest emails as far afield as India. The UK version has been adapted, somewhat crudely, for a domestic audience by someone or some organisation unknown. The figures quoted bear no relation whatsoever to the situation in the United Kingdom.
Given this background, it seems that it is the sentiment behind the message that keeps it in circulation rather than accurate facts. This message pits one group experiencing hardship (pensioners) against another (refugees and migrants), suggesting that compassionate policies for these groups operate according to the rules of a zero sum game. As one benefits, the other suffers. True? No. But it seems to be intuitively persuasive, and especially at a time when austerity measures mean that there is a widespread sense of unfairness among people who are feeling the pinch of conracting state support. Pensioners are undoubtedly facing serious challenges at the moment, facing cuts to tax allowances and other benefits. It is right to raise awareness of their plight – but not at the expense of other vulnerable groups.
If you receive emails of this sort, please take the time to set the sender straight about some of the facts - and to point out that this approach will never have the effect of building compassion and understanding but instead encourages the opposite.

Regretably this is a perception shared by many of the British public and in some cases it is spread by some of the popular press! Its seems easier to spread this kind of untruth than the truth.
It adds to a general anti immigration hysteria that is ramapnt in the UK which the Govt is helping spread for its own political agenda and ambitions.
The Govt could counter this but it doesn't as it serves its own purpose in order to gain votes.
Question is then how to inform the public of the facts? Who will print / spread the actual truth and who will not?
Geronimo I agree with you. this is the sort of thing that the coalition thrives on and many of the British people are too gullible to see through it and pay no real interest in British politics . I had one of these mails sent to me and it shows how racist we have become in the UK.
The benefits system is equal for all. But it's the excuses that certain groups are able to get away with that make it different. I'm a 3rd generation immigrant, but I can barely claim discrimination because I don't look Italian and I don't have an Italian accent. A random attack on me in the street can't be "Race hate", or anything like that. For Asians, Somalians, etc., it's different.
How likely is it that these immigrants are facing mental problems due to racism, etc.? Pretty likely. There we go, there's an excuse almost exclusive to those immigrants.
I could claim benefits due to mental illness. My parents were both alcoholic and violent. I was put in a mental hospital not too long ago, attempted suicide five times since I was 13, and diagnosed with Aspergers when I was really young. But I choose not to be a sponge, because that's a weakness.
But how many immigrants do I see choosing to do exactly that? Many. Let's face it, if there's a way to get free money, or bend the system over and fuck it, people will do that. And if they have brown skin, an unorthodox religion and a funny accent, it's much easier for them to do so.
It's not in the rules - It's the excuses.
That said, there's a severe lack of communication on both sides of the argument. That leads to so many misunderstandings. We have those on one side refusing to speak to "racist thugs", and those on another side who want nothing to do with "leftist hippies". Get over it, folks. Nobody's born right.
A resurgence of right-wing politics is rampant across Europe, not just in the UK. For a serious academic appraisal of the situation look out for: Right Wing Populism in Europe: Politics and Discourse to be published this autumn.

I recieved one of these claims that illegals get more than us ( a english native ) and as you can see did some research to see if it was fact or fiction.
1 / I found the govt.briefing paper in response to the e mail and the FOI request regarding the claim.
It appears to disprove the e mail claims ?
2 / But to my understanding a refugee has to claim asylum in the nearest country ?
Germany,France,Spain,Italy and many other countries to the east are surly safe enough.
3 / I did read that immigrants living in the uk but with children in home country get paid out the uk purse for benifits and not the home country.
4 / Could it be i wonder that our payments are more generous ?
I would like to make it clear on here that i do NOT approve of these repetative granting of asylym just because they cannot be botherd to catch them and send them home.
Perhaps there would then be enough funds to give o.a.p a decent pension etc. and the rest of us not to suffer cutbacks in services.
IF THEY ARE ILLEGAL TURN THEM OUT......
you are welcome to e mail me about points raised 2/3/4/ i would like to know..
I am a pensioner who paid tax and n.i.contributions for45 yrs.after being on house of lords web site I see refugees will get max state pension even though tbey have not paid into it. In this present day of finacial restraint why not award them half the pension
I agree with the above statement. I believe the issue here is not the fact that immigrants are receiving state pension. The issue is that UK citizen pensioners are receiving in and around the same amount of money as said immigrants. We should be looking after UK elders much more than foreign migrants.
I have just received this from a family member.
There's a whole generation of people who read this and believe it - they need telling that it's wrong info.
It's happening again. This time by a far-right group who have planted themselves on Facebook known as 'The New Daily Patriot'. They are linked to other far-right groups such as the EDL and they are spreading this hoax (a proven hoax http://www.hoax-slayer.com/uk-pensioners-asylum-seekers-protest.shtml) using it as a recruitment drive to gain followers who then spread the message to make it go viral. Facebook is supposed to ban race hate organisations from making pages but when I reported them nothing happened. They stand behind 'free speech' but the group banned me from posting reasoned arguments on their page. Someone needs to do something - this is a far more organised approach at using this propaganda than I've seen before.
Whether it's by malicious intent to create a hate lobby or not: the simple fact is that there is a plethora of UK citizens out there ready, chomping at the bit, to receive this kind of misinformation, The reason is as plain as the nose on our two-faced government: we're fed up of being told when we need to spend more money on things we don't need. Iraq, Afghanistan... where the oil comes from, and to cap it all we now have to pay more for the stuff that was better priced before we stuck our greedy heels into THEIR land - THEIR resource just to cover our expenditure! A six year old could work it out - unless they were a bully. Oil costs a lost less without weapons. It's your dollar tax, your VAT. Why haven't we got a lobby to say NO?
