Operation Nexus and Migrant Communities: questions and concerns

As Operation Nexus, which checks the personal details of people arrested by the police against UKBA databases, is rolled out nationally, important questions and concerns are raised by migrant support groups about the way the initiative is carried out and presented to the public.

On Friday MRN hosted a briefing by the Met Police and RAMFEL about Operation Nexus. Even though many questions were addressed at the session there was still a sense of uncertainty about the initiative, anger at how it is presented and concern about some of the implications for vulnerable migrants, their communities and those supporting them.
A welcome speech on integration by Ed Miliband

As with all political speeches the challenge is how to turn the vision into reality. The tone and the issues raised by Ed Miliband's opening pitch on integration last week are a step in the right direction.

Ed Miliband's speech on integration was interesting for a variety of reasons. First, in stark contrast to the immigration speech by home secretary Theresa May, also last week, the overall tone of his comments was broadly positive.
Our Day launch event: celebrating the work of migrant organisations

On Wednesday a group of seventy migrant organisations, activists and supporters got together for the launch event of Our Day, the campaign to celebrate International Migrants Day in the UK. The event was an opportunity to acknowledge the work of migrant community organisations in London.

A professional UK Border Agency should show due regard to the impact of high profile operations and media work on communities and localities. Its recent use of social media to publicise Operation Mayapple is the latest in a series of operation that shows this is not the case.

Earlier this week the usually sedate Home Office twitter account sprung into a bit of a tweeting frenzy over UKBA’s most recent enforcement drive, Operation Mayapple. Other social media –youtube, flickr, storify- were also deployed to inform about the actions and results of the operation.
