Giving voice to the North African refugees living in Rome, the documentary "Like a Man on Earth" provides a direct insight into the brutal ways in which Libya, aided by Italian and European funds, has controlled the immigration from Africa into Europe. MRN is organising this exclusive film screening at the Rich Mix theatre in East London on 10 May at 6pm followed by a panel discussion with leading experts speaking about the current situation in Libya and Europe's response to it.
Here is the synopsis. In 2005, a law student from Addis Ababa fled Ethiopia to escape violent political repression, setting off for Libya across the desert border. Once in Libya, he attempted to make his way to the Mediterranean, only to be caught by one of the numerous criminal gangs that control the route. After many ordeals he was betrayed by the gang to the Libyan police, and deported back to Ethiopia.

The ending of child detention in immigration removal centres is a policy very close to the heart of the Lib Dem partners in the coalition government. But have the proposals done enough to dispel fears that old injustices will simply be reproduced in the new system?
The hundred plus people who gathered at the Deputy Prime Minister’s (DPM) announcement today about policy on the detention of children for immigration purposes this morning were divided in opinion as to just how big a step forward had been made towards humane treatment by the coalition government.

Scores of people active in migrant and refugee rights campaigns came together last night for the launch of a new report by the LDSG. Their message - expect detention to be a big issue in our dealings with the coalition.
Well over a hundred people turned up for the launch of the London Detainees Support Group’s new report, No Return, No Release, No Reason – Challenging Indefinite Detention.

MRN reported earlier this week that the practice of detaining children in immigration removal centres appears to have been ended. It now seems that this is not the case....
Information is emerging from the immigration detainee support networks which suggest that we might have been premature in our previous blog in saying that the detention of children seems to have been brought to and end by the coalition government.

There are now no children being held in the immigration detention estate in the UK. But is this the end of the campaign for the rights of asylum seekers, or the beginning of a new phase?
The coalition government is being credited with achieving its policy on ending the detention of children in its immigration estate by groups working with detainees across the country. The policy of child detention, rife under the days of the New Labour government, has seen around one thousand children detained in immigration removal centres around the country as members of families which were deemed eligible for expulsion from the UK by the authorities. It has been widely condemned by charities and agencies concerned with the welfare of children.
