legal aid

MRN is concerned over the proposed cuts to legal aid as the majority of immigration cases that are not asylum related are due to be taken out of scope. This is why we are backing the Sound Off For Justice Campaign. We made some videos with them explaining what the proposed changes would mean for migrants in the UK.
The Ministry of Justice has laid out plans to substantially cut Legal aid, the public funding that aims to ensure that everybody can have access to legal advice and representation. Under these proposals, the vast majority immigration cases that are not asylum related will be ineligible for Legal Aid funding, as will be other areas of law such as employment, housing and family law. Here is a briefing paper (opens PDF) MRN prepared on the topic explaingin in detail what this could mean for migrants' access to justice. If you are concerned about the proposed changes you might want to join the Sound Off For Justice campaign and lend your voice to stop the Government's proposed cuts to legal aid.

The Government has published the Bill containing major reforms to Legal Aid. Despite widespread opposition, only minor changes were introduced to the proposals that went out under consultation in November, meaning that accessible legal advice for migrants on a variety of issues could be compromised in the future.
Last week the Government finally announced its definitive plans regarding changes to Legal Aid, the public funding available to support access to legal advice and representation on a wide range of legal issues.

A day of action for Justice has been organised by the Justice for All Campaign this Friday. There will be local actions throughout the country and other ways of taking part. We urge all to add their voices to highlight the importance of good and accessible legal advice and representation.
Friday 3rd June will see a day of action for Justice organised by the coalition behind the Justice for All Campaign which is calling for people to take action in a variety of ways: organising local marches; writing to MPs; writing to local newspapers; leaving a voice message to the Minister for Justice and highlighting the issues on social media. Draft letters and ideas for actions on Friday can be found here. There will be marches and meetings throughout the country and MRN will be present at outside the Supreme Court in Westminster.

MRN is publishing a briefing document on the proposals for reform of legal aid and the effect that they could have for migrant community groups and organisations. The document will be updated as the government announces and implements its plans.
Frequent visitors of this blog may recall that back in February MRN, together with our colleagues at MRCF, organised an event with migrant community groups and legal experts to discuss legal aid. At the event we heard about the experiences of migrant groups with using legal aid, the Ministry of Justice proposals to reform it and the campaign Justice for All.

The government’s proposed reforms of legal aid would greatly reduce access to justice for many migrants and refugees in the UK. We urge groups to voice their concerns about these changes in the official consultation before the deadline of NEXT MONDAY. Our response is available online along with a template for responses.
The consultation by the Ministry of Justice on changes to legal aid in England and Wales closes at midday on Monday 14th of February. If implemented, the proposed changes would greatly reduce the ability of people on low incomes to get specialised legal advice and representation on a wide range of issues.
