Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith has reignited the migrant workers debate, with controversial comments reminiscent of Gordon Brown’s disastrous statement advocating ‘British jobs for British workers’ back in 2007.
Mr Duncan Smith’s provocative speech delivered in Madrid, was prominently trailed in the Daily Mail, which expressed relief that the former Tory leader is ‘daring to tell the truth’ about migrant workers. However, a closer look suggests that we may be being led astray once more on this issue.

In case you'd missed it, the government's latest consultation on settlement, domestic workers and Tier 5 is out. The verdict? We have a problem.
Following the government's 'tough talk' on immigration policy, this consultation sends out a stark message to migrants. Perhaps you'd imagined that coming to the UK for work would be difficult, but that at some point this hard graft would result in the possibility of attaining more security, and maybe even in becoming a citizen and settling here. Far from it, if this set of proposals is put into practice.

The starting gun has been fired, and another race is being run to provide Her Majesty’s Government with expert advice on matters on which they have already made up their minds. This time it’s about the best way to expel migrant workers who have made first rate contributions to the prosperity and well-being of the country. Sounds mad, but it’s true.....
Employment –related settlement, Tier 5 and Overseas Domestic Workers – a Consultation is the rather unenticing title of the latest paper setting out the views of the UKBA on how it can fulfil the mission of ministers to rid the immigration control system of anything that resembles a fairly decent deal for migrants. The gist of their argument is that evidence of performance in a skilled occupation for a period of five full years for an employer who has been required to meet a tough standard of proof that they really need you to do the job for them just isn’t enough to show that you have made a decent contribution to UK plc. Grind away for long hours, innovate, organise and produce, if your reward isn’t in the region of £150,000 a year then your number is up.

Mr Cameron’s speech before an audience in Hampshire, trailed all over the media this morning, is a classic piece of political rhetoric designed to demonise all his opponents as extremist, with only himself offering the voice of common sense.
The people who are against him, he tells us, are either the racist anti-immigrant BNP, or the cynical vested interests who want the floodgates open so they can profit from cheap labour. If these are the extreme then a nice modern, progressive Tory who merely wants to keep out bad immigrants and welcome the good is bound to be dispensing true wisdom on these issues (read the full speech here).

Over the last year I have had the pleasure of travelling around the UK to meet and work with migrant activists who want to take their work online. What resulted is a fantastic series of blogs exploring the experiences and impact of migration around the UK. In the next few weeks MRN will be publishing these blogs in our Migration Pulse section.
Stories have long been considered the best way to share human experiences and build empathy. In these days of psychological marketing and the 24-hour news cycle much can get distorted.  The British media play an especially prominent role in disseminating less than accurate information about migration and freely toss allegations at migrants, which are unfortunately resonated in the public statements of some of our decision makers.
