Labour’s record on immigration: Lessons from a turbulent decade - with former Immigration Minister, Barbara Roche

When:
16 Sep 2010 - 11:30 - 13:00
Where:
Institute for Public Policy Research , 4th Floor, 13-14 Buckingham Street, London, WC2N 6DF

Organised by ippr in partnership with the Labour pressure group Progress, Barbara Roche will be reflecting on Labour’s record along with other key figures from inside and outside government.

10 years ago, in September 2000, the then Immigration Minister Barbara Roche gave a seminal speech at ippr which set the direction for Labour immigration policy.

In the speech, Barbara Roche argued that increased immigration into the UK could bring strong benefits to the economy, but it needed to be managed.

In the wake of the 2010 General Election defeat, there has been much agonising in Labour circles as to whether the party got it wrong on immigration.

At this event, organised by ippr in partnership with the Labour pressure group Progress, Barbara Roche will be reflecting on Labour’s record along with other key figures from inside and outside government – including:

  • Matt Cavanagh – Former Special Advisor on Home Affairs at No. 10 Downing Street
  • Will Somerville – Author of ‘Immigration under New Labour’
  • Tim Finch, Head of Migration at ippr  (Chair)

Spaces at this event are limited, so to reserve a place please rsvp.
