Organisations working on Migration and Employment

Centre for Research and Analysis of Migration (CReAM), Univerdity College London
Research Centre
Conducts research into the causes, patterns and consequences of international migration in the UK. There is a focus on quantitative work. Projects on migrants and employment include an ongoing examination of the impact of immigration on local labour markets and another on the employment dynamics among immigrants and nationals.

Centre on Migration Policy and Society (COMPAS), University of Oxford
Research Centre
Conducts research in order to develop theory, inform public opinion and evaluate policy. Research into migration and employment has included projects on migrant sex workers, EU low-wage migrant workers; migrant domestic and care workers; and temporary work migration to the UK

Institute for Employment Studies
Independent research and consultancy organisation
Produces opinion, research and consultancy work on the migration of people for work. Past project on migrants and employment have included work on: migrant workers in the health service; highly-skilled migrants; and the employers perspective of migrant workers. In 2005 they were commissioned by the Home Office to research the recruitment and employment of migrant workers in the UK.

Institute of Employment Rights
Think Tank, links with Trades Unions
Produces research and publications on issues of employment law and legal developments in industrial relations. In 2006 published booklet on 'Labour Migration and Employment Rights'. Organises seminars and conferences.

Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR)
Think Tank
Has a team dedicated to migration issues. Research and publications on migration and employment includes: work on the potential of migration in the North-East of England; implications of the accession on Bulgaria and Romania to the EU for the UK; and a response to the Home Office 2005 consultation on managed migration

Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI)
Advice and assistance service
Offers advice and support to immigrants to the UK. Also runs campaigns, publishes reports and opinion pieces. Recent work on migration and employment includes a critique of the points based system.

Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF)
Social Policy Research and Development Charity
Carries out research alongside academic bodies. Engages with policy makers. One of its main focal points is immigration and inclusion. This branch has published work on low-wage Central and Eastern European migrants in the UK and on integration issues.

Kalayaan
Charity/support group
Provide an advocacy, advice and support service in for migrant domestic workers. Aims to alleviate abuse and exploitation. After a long campaign and with the help of other bodies and MPs they succeeded in 1998 in changing the law for the migration of domestic workers to the UK, allowing domestic workers to change employer and retain the right to work as a domestic worker. However these rights are currently under threat from proposed new immigration rules.

London Citizens
Network of community groups, including TELCO (The East London Community Organisation), South London Citizens, West London Citizens
Campaigns and training in areas where work. Two major campaigns have been to give low-wage (often migrant) workers a living wage in certain London institutions, a May Day for migrants march to Westminster. Campaign to regularise undocumented migrants.

Migrants Resource Centre
Charity and support centre for migrations in the UK
Offers drop-in and telephone advice to migrants with a particular focus on legal avenues available to counter discrimination. Encourages migrants to be involved in anti-poverty and work initiatives, and policy debate.

National Centre for Migration Studies (Ionad Naiseanta na h-Imrich)
Research and teaching centre
Provides research, teaching and publications for the study of migration relating to the people of Scotland. In particular interested in the socio-economic impact of migration on Scotland .They have recently completed a study on migrant workers in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR)
Independent Economic Research Institute, used mainly by policy makers and businesses
Research on migration and employment has included work on the discrimination of migrants and refugees in the UK labour market. Has published reviews and discussion papers on the reasons for migration to the UK; the economic impacts of the migration; and Brain Drain amongst other issues.

Sussex Centre for Migration Research
Research and Teaching Centre
Research focuses include: migration and rural work in Britain; low-wage Eastern and Central European migrants in the UK; forced labour and migration in the UK; and temporary migrant workers. Publishes the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.

Trades Union Congress (TUC)
Umbrella group for Trade Unions
Fights for equal rights for migrant workers and assists unions to recruit, represent and organise migrant workers. Also produces publications, research, seminars and campaigns. For example, in 2006 they held a seminar on organising and representing migrant workers. This year they have produced a report on migrant workers and safety at work.

Working Lives Research Institute
Research and teaching centre
Undertake academic research into all aspects of working lives, emphasising equality and social justice. Work at a European and local level campaigning and producing research and publications. They publish the journal: 'Work Organisation, Labour and Globalisation' which covers issues on the new global division of labour. They have also produced guidelines on tackling racism and xenophobia at work and have carried out research into the skills and de-skilling of migrant workers in East London.
