Global migration: the challenges for the West's political leaders November 2011

Jointly organised between the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Migration, Chatham House and MRN this roundtable explored the key policy dilemmas raised by international migration for leaders of liberal democracies.

In a world of growing mobility and with the debate on immigration increasingly polarised, how should political leaders address the key policy challenges of international flows of people?

Listen to a discussion between Jack Dromey MP, Matthew Goodwin, (Chatham House), Frank Sharry (America's Voice), Baroness Falkner of Margravine and Don Flynn (MRN). You can also view photos and read the transcript.

Building Progrssive Platforms: Annual Report 2010 January 2011

A quick overview of the work MRN has done in 2010, with insights into our network building activities, communications strategy and new approaches to collaborative working. At the same time we look into the future and take stock of the challenges ahead.

Our core activites for 2011 remain centred around promoting discussion, fact-finding, policy analysis and advocacy, seeking to make sense of local situations and build on successful good practice, rather than playing to the lowest common denominator.

Should citizenship be earned through compulsory volunteering? July 2010

The Borders, Citizenship and Immigration Act 2009 introduced a longer and more difficult process for becoming a British Citizen. However the then Government also proposed an option for those who wished to shorten this process called ‘active citizenship’, a type of regulated community volunteering that may come into force in 2011.

Under this scheme prospective citizens will need to show evidence that they have done voluntary work. So far though, there has been no detailed government plan about how this proposal might be implemented. MRN and MRCF suggest withdrawing the Active Citizenship proposal and put forward alternative suggestions.

Migrant Capital: a perspective on contemporary migration in London June 2010

This report highlights London’s role as a hub of migration to the UK. The presence of a diverse migrant population in London presents major challenges to the national government's aim of simplifying and ‘toughening up’ immigration management. It is likely that there will be an increase in national pressure on city administrations to monitor and control migrants. As a result, we can expect that London’s policy makers will find it more challenging to maintain a progressive stance on immigration.

However, The London Strategic Migration Partnership in particular is well-placed to develop a cohesive and forward-looking city strategy for maximising the benefits and addressing the challenges presented by migrants to the capital. It is possible that the strategies adopted for London will inform other regions, addressing the demands and needs of new arrivals.
